Chalk testing

Chalk testing on Ridgeway (large version)Road layers (large version)

A test strip of chalk has been chemically treated (known as stabilisation) and laid with tarmac in preparation for the sub base layer of the relief road to be constructed next year.

Chalk cut from Ridgeway will be used as sub base of the road, which will mean that quarried aggregate doesn’t need to be brought in from elsewhere.

The sub base stops the road surface from moving, and this test strip will ensure engineers get the stabilisation right first time when the sub base is laid.
