Cycleway works

by

Work has restarted on the cycleway at the Monkton Junction on the A354.

It will take around ten weeks for this last section to be completed. To ensure the work is carried out safely, between 8.30am and 4.30pm there will be temporary traffic lights or southbound lane closures operating in the area.

The cycleway work stopped earlier this year so that it wouldn’t disrupt holiday traffic.

The last section of the northern part of the relief road cycleway – from the hairpin bend to the Ridgeway Bridge – will be built after the main carriageway is open early next year.

It seems like the traffic lights “between 8:30 and 4:30” has been forgotten. The traffic out of Weymouth this morning was ridiculous, and that was before 8:00am. The queue the Weymouth was a few miles long, and only a few cars at a time were let through, but the queue Dorchester way was much shorter.

Have they now gone? There does not seem to be any information on these overnight traffic lights. And yes I too was late for work this morning.

    • Weymouth Relief Road Says:

      Hi Paul, Dave,

The lights had to be left up overnight (unplanned) because the concrete backfill of a trench had not hardened sufficiently to take traffic yesterday evening.

Every effort is taken to minimise disruption to traffic but inevitably some works can not be undertaken without traffic control.

The metal safety barriers in the area have been installed to help reduce the number of times that lights are required.

That is indeed excellent news. The cycleway network around Weymouth is beginning to look most encouraging.
I know you can’t complete it until the road is open but will any other sections on the main route be open earlier, please?

    • Weymouth Relief Road Says:

      Hi David,

It is hoped that the cycleway from Manor Roundabout to Littlemoor Road will be open at the same time as the main carriageway but this is subject to a new mains being laid.

Work on the stretch of cycleway across the Winterborne Monkton embankment this should be finished before the road is open, completing the northern most section of the cycleway.

The stretch of cycleway south of the Ridgeway should be completed by Easter.

We will update the blog as sections are open.
